Not every ride is the same. Some remain in your memory forever, others fade very quickly. When you have conquered the Alps on a Harley-Davidson you've created memories that last forever. The scenery—truly indescribable—will leave you at a loss for words when you're trying to tell your friends how impressive those mountains really are.
Munich, Germany—home of the world's best beer and the gateway to the Alps. What an introduction to Europe! Our impressive accommodation has its own beer garden, filled with locals. Learn the "proper" way to drink a German weiss beer and discover the snacks and side dishes that make an authentic beer garden such a special place. Dive right into the culture!
After a day of "rest" it's time to pick up the iron that is going to take you over the mountains. The current year HD model of your choice is waiting for you. Not 15 miles from the shop the riding gets interesting. Winding roads through the Bavarian farmland are the perfect place to familiarize yourself with the new machine.
Traveling south in Bavaria it's impossible to ignore the remarkable cleanliness, and orderliness of this land. Everything seems "just right," and it is! Waiting down the road is a castle. Actually, two castles. Over on the horizon, every now and then is a glimpse. And then, as the impressively situated Neuschwanstein comes into focus there's no doubt you've seen it before. Its Disney’s castle! Yet here it is, right on top of the cliff. Not abstractly in a movie trailer, but right in front of you in real life. All the more impressive is the fact that there is another castle of equal size that you didn't notice until just now. That's typical Europe—the more you look, the more amazing it gets.
Our first overnight on the road is on the edge of a beautiful lake, not far from the castles, in another remarkable Bavarian hotel. The views of the surrounding mountains and the castles on the hill are unforgettable.
The mountains punctuating the horizon offer the promise of a great ride tomorrow.
Day two offers more unforgettable highlights. In the morning, riding on the northern edge of the Alps, anticipation builds. Finally, it's time to turn south and start to climb. The incredible torque of the Harleys is put to good use as the road winds up into the mountains.
Ride to Germany's tallest mountain, the Zugspitze. A cable car will whisk you to the top for a view that reaches all across Austria from Switzerland to Italy!
Back on the bikes another surprising thing becomes evident. In Europe, countries go by as fast as states in America. As the German border fades in the rearview mirror the Austrian Alps fill the windshield. The residents of the little town of Pfunds will be quite impressed as the group rolls into town. Harleys are sought after, but not common in Europe. A group like ours going anywhere in the Alps draws a lot of positive attention!
The delightful Post hotel is home for the next three nights. The free days here mean choices. Take a ride, and explore the mountains? Hang around the hotel and treat yourself to a relaxing spa experience? Or mix it up and do a little of both? The choice is yours! There's no need to plan it out – you can see how the weather is on each day and make your decisions in the morning. What is certain is that whichever choice you make it will be another great day on a grand adventure!
The free day rides are two brilliant loops into Switzerland and Austria, exploring the high Alps in each of these countries. Trying to explain to your friends back home what riding an Austrian mountain pass is all about may take all winter – and they still won't get it. Your photos of Austria's Silverettastrasse will surely be the talk of many club meetings.
If Germany and Austria are orderly, Switzerland is pristine. The wonderfully engineered Swiss roads seem designed for big V-twins. Surely it can't get any better than this?
Surprise number two—yes it can. From Austria the tour route continues south to the shore of Italy's Lake Garda. Here towering, almost vertical mountains plunge into a lake that is over 1,000 feet deep. It's almost becoming routine—another day with the most remarkable views. Another 400 photos to take. Yet another day when "oh, wow!" becomes the byword. Another day of riding in the Alps—it's magical.
Our three-nights on Lago di Garda means more choices. The hotel spa is a perfect place to spend the day. Or take a dip in the lake. Exciting rides run through the hills high above the lake shore. It's your day – spend it as you please.
The second free day is dedicated to off-bike adventure. A trip to Venice by train will allow you to see this amazing city without having to suffer through the ride across the flats, and deal with all the hassles of parking.
A bit of culture is great, but after a day at sea level it's time to get back into the mountains. Very possibly the most impressive range in the Alpine chain, Italy's Dolomites seem to leap from the valleys. Around every turn is another postcard–perfect scene. It’s only appropriate that we spend two days riding here—and an overnight as well. The most remarkable peaks are surely the Tre Cime di Lavaredo—the three peaks. We won't miss them! Little wonder this is a world heritage site.
From the Dolomites the ride continues east to the Austrian lakes. From the balcony of your hotel the view is either a serene lake setting, or towering white Slovenian Alps. It's a double-overnight stop, but surely you want to ride on the free day, and add another pin to your map with a ride into Slovenia, part of the former Yugoslavia.
One of Austria's most impressive passes, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is our route north across the Alps.
Salzburg, known to all thanks to The Sound of Music, is where we say farewell to Austria. A walking tour through the old section of town gives us insight into a place with 1500 years of recorded history!
And then, finally, it's the last leg of the journey. As with the first day on the road, this ride is across the farms and fields just north of the Alps. Riding into Munich with the Alps dominating the southern horizon is a perfect way to end a fantastic two-week tour. No doubt the memories will last forever, as will the tall tales at the clubhouse back home. It just doesn't get any better than this.
