Links to motorcycle gear, travel items and gadgets

The stuff we use, and more.

This list is only lightly organized.

What you simply can't live without may be further down the page, so do have a look about before heading away.

Leathers

Vanson Leathers and Bates Leathers both make very nice custom riding jackets as well as complete leather suits.

Gore-Tex & Textile gear

Gortex lined pants and jackets are excellent as well.

Most offer built-in "armor" or pads in high impact areas such as your elbows and knees.

Gortex is warm and dry, easy to wash, and eliminates the need for an additional rainsuit. HELD, KLIM, Aerostich and BMW make some of the best Gortex riding suits.

The best of them are quite expensive, but more than pay for themselves in comfort and versatility.

Under-gear

Wearing the right stuff under your riding gear is a key to being comfortable throughout the day.

Kari Traa
Kari Traa

Kari Traa makes excellent merino wool base layers. There are many reasons why we love wool. It regulates your body temperature to a comfortable level based on the conditions: It cools you down on hot days, and insulates warmth on cold days. Wool also has the unique ability to keep you warm, even when it gets damp! Wool baselayer is also perfect for motorcycle trips because it is self-cleaning. All you have to do is hang the wool garments up for airing, and they feel fresh again for the next day.

Chill Wind Clothing
Chill Wind

Chill Wind Clothing of New Zealand is another source for merino wool clothing, featuring a unique combination of wool, possum, and silk that offers warmth and versatility.

Heated Gear

Electric vests & jackets work well and are highly recommended.

Electrics are the only garment that will generate heat. In contrast to insulation in the form of sweaters and long johns, electrics will help you get warm as well as stay warm! Gerbing, Warm & Safe, & Aerostitch WindStop are all good choices.

Note: All of our BMW bikes feature the BMW electrical accessory connection. However, some electrics will overload the system.

If you are bringing electric clothing, please bring a fused battery connection for them. BMWs new "one wire" electrical system (as on the R1200GS and some other models) will not always support electrics if they are connected via the BMW plug. Hence, battery hookups and Y connectors are needed. We will be happy to take care of the wiring for you.
